Problem

Learning tools that don't talk to each other.

Existing e-learning platforms fragment the experience: separate systems for content, assessment, analytics, and communication. Students and instructors bounce between tools that don't share data. Comprehension data sits in isolated quiz results with no feedback loop. Real-time signal — the kind that could adapt instruction — doesn't exist in most deployed platforms.

Research

Unified by design, not by integration.

The architectural decision was to build a single product, not a collection of services stitched together. Every feature — auth, content delivery, assessment, analytics, notifications — shares the same database, the same real-time layer, and the same permission model. This isn't a technical constraint. It's what makes comprehension scoring possible: the system sees the full student journey, not fragments of it.

Role-based access control was designed from day one. Students and lecturers operate in the same application but see completely different views, workflows, and data. The permission model is enforced at the database level, not the UI level.

Engineering

Full-stack, single product.

Authentication & RBAC

Secure signup, login, and role-based access. Students and lecturers see different interfaces, data, and capabilities — enforced at the database level.

Student Dashboard

Course enrollment, progress tracking, and assignment submission. Clean interface focused on what the student needs to do next.

Lecturer Dashboard

Course creation, content management, and student performance overview. Real-time visibility into class comprehension and engagement.

Comprehension Scoring

Real-time scoring engine that aggregates performance signals across quizzes, assignments, and engagement patterns into actionable comprehension metrics.

Analytics Suite

Interactive charts and reports for both roles. Students see their own progress; lecturers see class-wide trends, distribution analysis, and intervention candidates.

Notification System

Real-time alerts for assignment deadlines, grade publications, and course announcements. Delivered in-app and configurable per user preference.

Mobile-responsive layout with optimized touch targets. PDF export for reports and transcripts. PapaParse for data import, jsPDF for document generation, Geist typography for the interface.

What's Next

Shipping the gaps.

PocketLearn is a working product in active development. The core architecture is solid — auth, RBAC, real-time scoring, analytics, and notifications are all functional. The path to production means closing the remaining gaps that matter for real institutional deployment.

Password reset & email verification — Account recovery and identity verification flow
Rate limiting & input sanitization — Security hardening for production traffic
CI/CD pipeline — Automated testing and deployment infrastructure
Bulk operations — Batch enrollment, bulk assignment creation, mass notifications
Course import/export — Content portability across instances
Admin panel — Institution-level configuration and user management
